Opening Day is an unofficial American holiday and a true marker of Spring. This year Opening Day falls on March 28. Our team is gearing up for the start of baseball season by crafting baseball cocktails that honor the greatest to ever play the game. These cocktails are heavy hitters, just like those we tip our hats to below.
Baseball Cocktails for the Baseball Greats
Baseball Great: Ty Cobb
Ty Cobb joined the Detroit Tigers in 1905 and spent 22 years with the organization. He set an impressive 90 records throughout his career, spanning categories such as runs scored, runs batted in, career batting average, and the most bases stolen by any MLB player.
Ty Cobb “The Georgia Peach” Cocktail
- 1 oz Coppercraft Social 416 Gin
- .5 oz Thatcher’s Organic Peach Liqueur
- 1 oz fresh squeezed orange juice
- 1 oz cherry syrup
- 1 oz lime juice
Combine ingredients (save for orange juice) in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into collins glass. Top with orange juice.
Baseball Great: Barry Bonds
Barry Bonds – though not without controversy – still holds the record for most home runs at a whopping 762 hits. He sits just above Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth.
Barry Bonds “Superhuman” Cocktail
- 1 oz Blue Curacao Liqueur
- 1 oz Thatchers Organic Blood Orange Liqueur
- 1 oz Coppercraft Citrus Vodka
Pour ingredients in order into a small glass. Layering ingredients by pouring over an upside down bar spoon.
Baseball Great: Willie Mays
Willie Mays is considered the greatest center fielder to ever play the game, despite missing two prime years due to military service. He ranks at the top of the Home Run Club and the 3000 Hits Club and was named an All-Star Game starter 18 times.
Willie Mays “The Catch” Cocktail
- 2 oz Coppercraft Rum
- 1.5 oz Thatcher’s Organic Peach Liqueur
- 3 oz orange juice
- 2 oz pineapple juice
- Splash of grenadine
Combine Coppercraft Rum and Thatcher’s Organic Peach Liqueur in a glass with ice. Stir and then pour in orange juice and pineapple juice. Stir again. Drizzle in grenadine and let it sink to the bottom.
Baseball Great: Lou Gehrig
Lou Gehrig played 2,130 consecutive games over 15 years. His final game was on April 30, 1939.
Lou Gehrig “The Iron Horse” Cocktail
- 2 oz Coppercraft Bourbon
- 1.5 oz grapefruit liqueur
- .5 tsp simple syrup
- 1 oz grapefruit juice
- 1 oz sparkling soda
Combine all ingredients – except sparkling soda – in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into chilled rocks glass with ice. Top with sparkling soda.
Baseball Great: Hank Aaron
Hank Aaron achieved his status in the Hall of Fame through sheer consistency, with 20 seasons of relentless great plays and 25 All Star games.
Hank Aaron “Hammer” Cocktail
- 1 oz Coppercraft Bourbon Whiskey
- .5 oz Coppercraft Rye Whiskey
- 2 dashes Peychaud’s bitters
- 3 dashes celery bitters
- .5 oz brandy
- .25 oz simple syrup
- 1 pinch celery salt
- 4 spritzes absinthe
Combine all ingredients – except for absinthe – into a mixing glass with ice. Stir until well-chilled. Spritz absinthe into a chilled rocks glass, and then pour in the rest of the ingredients.
Baseball Great: Babe Ruth
Widely regarded as the greatest baseball player of all time, Babe Ruth is a star even by today’s standard, nearly 100 years after his career ended.
Babe Ruth “The Great Bambino” Cocktail
- 2 oz Coppercraft Applejack
- 1 oz Coppercraft Rye Whiskey
- 4 oz milk
- 2 oz peanut butter
- 1 oz caramel syrup
- Dash of salt
- Salted peanuts, garnish
Mix all the ingredients in a blender. Pour into glass and serve. Garnish by sprinkingling salted peanuts over the top. Serves two.
